Our first ‘Hero of Football’ Jesus Tomillero.

Football surely is one of my greatest passions. I started playing when I was 5/6 years old and I’ve never stopped since.

Normally, during the game, in the field, there are no differences. The stronger one wins. It doesn’t matter if you are straight or homosexual.

Voetballen is een van mijn grootste passies. Ik begon te spelen toen ik 5/6 jaar oud was en ik ben er nooit mee gestopt.Tijdens het spel, in het veld, zijn er geen verschillen. De sterkste partij wint. Het maakt niet uit of je nu hetero of homo bent.

Being someone who was very small, I had to work twice as hard to get into football teams.
Being black meant I had to accept racism on the football field.

Being gay meant I could not be myself in or outside of Football, especially in the locker room.
For me it’s been a three way battle. My race, my height and my sexuality.

I still play at the age of 57.

I hope my age doesn’t become another obstacle.
Things have changed a great deal in regard to acceptance of gay sports people, but we still have a long way to go before everyone is truly equal.

Voetbal werd vanaf mijn 10^e jaar een heel belangrijk onderdeel van mijn leven.

Omdat ik klein ben, moest ik twee keer zo hard werken om in een voetbalteam te komen.Een donkere huidskleur betekende dat ik racisme op het voetbalveld moest accepteren.En als homoseksueel kon ik binnen het voetbal niet mezelf zijn, vooral niet in de kleedkamer. Voor mij is het dus een drievoudige strijd geweest. Mijn afkomst, mijn lengte en mijn seksualiteit. Nu ben ik 57 jaar oud en ik speel nog steeds.

Ik hoop dat mijn leeftijd niet het volgende obstakel is.

Er zijn al veel dingen veranderd in de acceptatie van homoseksuele sporters, maar we hebben nog een lange weg af te leggen voordat iedereen echt gelijk is.

For me football is a language. It’s a common ground that lets us express ourselves and makes us equals. I’ve to played football for 18 years, and in many countries; including the UK, USA, Belgium and Italy.

Being gay was part of that journey for me. It never defined me but was part of me as a person and a player. I’ve been lucky enough to have never been homophobically abused but I know that is not the same for everyone, including my team mates. The world is still not equal, and it won’t be unless we fight for it. 

I am a midfielder and I play football in the 1^st women division with KAA Gent Ladies. I am is also part of the Under 19 women national youth team of Belgium. Together with the coach of the U19 and my team mates I participated in the Heroes of Football campaign because we think it’s important to talk about your sexual orientation and it shouldn’t be an issue in your team.

Ik ben een middenvelder en speel in de 1^e vrouwen divisie bij KAA Gent. Ook maak ik deel uit van het U19 Belgische Nationale Vrouwen Jeugdteam. Samen met de U19 coach en mijn teamgenoten neem ik deel aan de Heroes of Football campagne omdat ik het belangrijk vind om over je seksuele geaardheid te praten en van mening ben het zou geen probleem in een team zou moeten zijn.

I am very passionate about football and I play football in the 1st women division with KAA Gent Ladies. Several times I was selected as a player for the Under 19 women national youth team of Belgium. My dream is to become part of the National Women Team of Belgium: The Belgian Red Flames. I am very open about my sexual orientation and I have no problem to talk about it with my team mates. For me it doesn’t matter if you are gay, hetero or bisexual. And I think it’s important to spread this important message in the world of football.

Ik ben erg gepassioneerd over voetbal en ik speel in de 1e vrouwen divisie bij KAA Gent. Verscheidene keren ben ik geselecteerd voor het U19 Belgische Vrouwen Nationale Jeugdteam. Mijn droom is om onderdeel te worden van het Nationale Vrouwenteam van België: De Red Flames.

Ik ben open over mijn seksuele geaardheid en ik heb dan ook geen probleem om hierover met mijn teamgenoten te praten. Voor mij maakt het niet uit of je homo, hetero of biseksueel bent en Ik vind het belangrijk om dit bericht te verspreiden in de voetbalwereld.

In the interview, I shared what I experienced and how I chose not to come out. I decided that, in order to keep doing what I liked, I had to keep a low profile and forget my sexuality.

If I had come out, I would have lost my only source of income at the time. When I stopped, I remember there was a team mate who sent me an e-mail. I’ve heard from someone that you are gay. Is that true? I said: “Yes, it’s true.”

That was a team mate who I’d been playing with for 8 years and he stopped talking to me. So, it is like it is. Things are changing but within the sport nothing has changed.

In het interview vertel ik wat ik heb meegemaakt en waarom ik ervoor gekozen heb om niet uit de kast te komen. Ik heb dat besloten om uiteindelijk te kunnen blijven doen wat ik het liefste deed nl. voetballen.

Uit de kast komen zou hebben betekent dat ik mijn enige bron van inkomsten zou hebben verloren.Toen ik stopte, ontving ik een mail van een van mijn teamgenoten. Hij had gehoord dat ik homo was en vroeg mij of dat waar was. Ik zei: ja, het is waar.Dit was dus een teamgenoot met wie ik 8 jaar heb gevoetbald en vanaf dat moment heeft hij niet meer met mij gesproken. Jammer maar het is zoals het is. Er is wel wat veranderd maar binnen de sport is er niets veranderd.

My name is Riana Nainggolan and I’ve been playing football since I was 4 years old. I live with my girlfriend and my homosexuality has never been a problem on the pitch. Not for my teammates, not for my rivals, not for the fans. Neither in Belgium where I was born and grew up, nor in Italy where I live and play now.

Outside of the pitch I have sometimes perceived the disapproving glaze of people who pretend to judge you because you walk hand in hand with the woman you love.

But I live the way I like. I’ve acquired this awareness with the help of my twin brother Radja, who was the first person I talked to about my homosexuality. That day he told me: your happiness is the only thing that counts, who cares about what other people think of you.

Radja and myself have started playing football together on the streets of Antwerp. Today he’s a worldwide famous champion, he plays for AS Roma in the Italian Serie A. I’ve also played in Serie A with AS Roma women team and now I’m a five-a-side player for Unicusano Tivoli.

We live in a world where prejudice and fear make people think that a gay footballer should hide his identity and a female player is lesbian by default. That’s not the way it is.

Football is inclusive, passion, dreams, happiness. Football is the freedom to be yourself.

Ik ben Riana Nainggolan en ik voetbal sinds mijn 4e jaar. Ik woon met mijn vriendin en op het veld is mijn homoseksualiteit nooit een probleem geweest. Niet voor mijn teamgenoten, niet voor mijn rivalen, niet voor de fans. Niet in België, waar ik geboren ben en opgroeide en niet in Italië waar ik nu woon en speel.

Buiten het veld zie ik soms de afkeurende blikken van mensen omdat je hand in hand loopt met de vrouw van wie ik hou. Maar ik leef zoals ik wil. Mijn tweelingbroer Radja heeft mij geholpen. Hij was de eerste persoon met wie ik over mijn homoseksualiteit sprak en hij vertelde me: “jouw geluk is het enige dat telt en je moet je niets aantrekken van wat andere mensen van je denken”.

Radja en ik zijn samen op straat in Antwerpen gaan voetballen. Vandaag is hij een wereldberoemde kampioen, hij speelt voor AS Roma in de Italiaanse Serie A.Ik heb ook in de Serie A gespeeld met het AS Roma vrouwen team en nu speel ik voor Unicusano Tivoli.

We leven in een wereld waar vooroordelen en angst mensen laat denken dat homoseksuele voetballers hun identiteit moeten verbergen en een vrouwelijke speler zo wie zo lesbisch is. Maar dat is dus niet zo. Voetbal is inclusiviteit, passie, dromen, geluk. Voetbal is de vrijheid om jezelf te mogen zijn.

Ik ben Max Kappert, amateur speler bij VV Hellendoorn in Hellendoorn. Aan het einde van de puberteit kwam ik erachter dat ik op mannen viel. Ik wilde zijn wie ik was, dus besloot ik in de A junioren uit de kast te komen.

Dit was zeker spannend, maar door een fijne groep vrienden en trainers om mij heen, kon ik helemaal mijzelf zijn. Het was nieuw dat er een jongen bij de club voetbalde die op mannen viel, maar hier heb ik totaal geen problemen mee gehad. Net zoals de andere mannen, ben ik gewoon een jongen die graag voetbalt. Het feit dat ik op mannen val is bijzaak.

I am Max Kappert, amateur player at VV Hellendoorn in Hellendoorn. At the end of puberty, I found out that I fell on men.

I wanted to be who I was, so I decided to come out of the closet in the A juniors. This was definitely exciting, but due to a great group of friends and trainers around me, I could be completely myself. It was new that there was a boy at the club who fell on men, but I have not had any problems with this.

Just like the other men, I’m just a man who likes to play football.

I have played football in organised teams since I was 8 years old, all the way through school and University.

After graduating I started to play for an LGBT team and have been doing so for the past 16 years.

I have played for 3 teams since graduating, Leicester Wildecats, Manchester Village FC and since 2008 Stonewall FC.

Like any successful team, the common thread between all of the clubs I have played for is trust between the players, a will to win and commitment to the team goal.  These traits are necessary when the team also has to break down barriers in society and I have been proud to play for each of these teams.

Stonewall FC has been the pinnacle of my career.

Ik speel sinds mijn 8^e, vanaf de basisschool tot en met de universiteit, in teamverband voetbal.

Na mijn afstuderen (16 jaar geleden), heb ik gespeeld voor 3 verschillende LHBT-teams: Leicester Wildecats, Manchester Village FC en sinds 2008 Stonewall FC.

Wat alle clubs waarvoor ik gespeeld heb gemeenschappelijk hebben en belangrijk is voor elk succesvol team is vertrouwen tussen de spelers, een wil om te winnen en de inzet voor het teamdoel.

Dit is nodig wanneer het team ook nog de LHBT barrières in de gemeenschap moet afbreken en ik ben er trots op geweest om voor elk van deze teams gespeeld te hebben.

Stonewall FC is de top van mijn carrière geweest.

Oprichter van FC Fortitudo Calcio 81, een homovriendelijk team uit Italië. Sinds 2009 is Daniele Recchia organisator en promotor van het team. 

Gay, heteroseksueel, trans maakt geen verschil. Het gaat om de spelers en een team dat wil laten zien hoeveel het waard is. Het belangrijkste is om plezier te hebben en als team getest te worden. Iedereen is welkom bij FC Fortitudo.
